Modern Character

A garden laid to lawn in need of a little character . . . but it had to be modern. Squared edges and straight lines paired with natural stone and antique bricks gave an interesting and multi-textured garden full of quirky style.  A space full of light, multi-use zones and softened with planting, this garden is designed to be lived in.

The Brief

With a garden design in hand, our client came to us with a basic idea of what he wanted but needed additional guidance and inspiration. Builder and Foras customer Stuart Calvert recommended they visit our Stowbridge show gardens. The initial design had a square Koi Pond as the focus, with all other paved areas utilising angular straight lines, however further development of the design was required as the client felt that it needed more. Working alongside our director John they opted for warm toned Avery limestone, which really brought the design together.

The garden needed to feel open yet intricate and contain enough paved areas to offer flexible entertaining solutions. A full outdoor kitchen and bar area, secluded seating pod and stylish motorcycle garage completed the design.

The Project

To complement the red brick and buff mortar of the house Avery limestone in the 30mm thickness was chosen. This stone has a delicate fossil detail and a gentle warm creamy colour, the 30mm thickness is robust to ensure that this stone really will last a lifetime. A smooth sandblasted finish gives a uniformity to the slabs and the gently tumbled edge adds a softness and character. Bullnosed copings were used on the steps to add an addition finishing detail.

Avery is a versatile stone, with additional slabs being cut to form a worktop for the outdoor bar and the complimentary brick used to clad the outdoor fire surround. Using the same material in these areas helps to tie the whole design together. To add another texture Foras antique brick paviours were used for the pathways and lower patio, their texture and tone picked out the colour of the house and contrasted beautifully against the smoothness of the Avery.

To lead into the driveway the client chose Foras St. Quentin silver grey driveway setts, their thickness allows for vehicles to safely drive over which providing a more interesting and classier finish than a traditional driveway sett.

With its angular design, zoned areas and square Koi Pond, this garden is the ultimate modern oasis!
